Blepharitis

What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a condition that causes your eyelids to become inflamed. It typically occurs at the edge of the eyelids when the oil glands become clogged. The area surrounding your eyelids can become red and irritated, and it can cause infections or other conditions if it's not treated.

Blepharitis is caused by bacteria or blockage in your eye lids' oil glands. Other causes can include a hormone imbalance, allergies, or a viral infection. Also, it's possible that a skin condition, like eczema, can lead to blepharitis. We will evaluate your condition to determine the cause of your blepharitis and provide the necessary treatment.

There are a few simple tests to diagnose blepharitis. We will examine your eyelids using a magnifying instrument or take a sample of the old or crust of your eyelid.

Symptoms of Blepharitis

One of the first signs of the condition is watery and red eyes accompanied by a burning or stinging sensation. Your eyes can also become itchy, and your skin can flake off. It's also common for eyelids to become swollen and red, or have eyelids stick together. It is a chronic condition but does not lead to permanent eye damage. Always

Treating Blepharitis

An eye doctor from our staff will offer several treatments to control your blepharitis. We will suggest a warm compress for a mild condition, but only prescriptions can work in some cases. Some include antibiotics that can attach the bacterial infection in the eyes. These are in the form of eye drops, creams, or ointments. There are also steroids to help control the inflammation, and Restasis to relieve the symptoms.  We will also determine if another untying condition, such as rosacea, may lead to your blepharitis.
